Apply to the Art Blocks x OpenSea Artist Residency Program

The Art Blocks x OpenSea Artist Residency program supports generative artists. We invite artists to apply to participate in a 4-6 week individual residency in Marfa, Texas. Our artist casita, or guest house, is fully furnished and provides residents with a peaceful setting in which to pursue their creative endeavors. Participating artists will receive accommodations, a stipend, an Art Blocks Studio contract, and time to focus on developing their artwork while being surrounded by the Marfa environment and community.

At the culmination of the residency, artists will provide a presentation of their work to the local community. Artists cannot be in school or committed to another residency while in the Art Blocks x OpenSea Artist Residency program or use the residency period to work on commercial projects or commissions. Coding support will not be provided. Participating artists must be able to create generative art or work with someone who can assist technically.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed quarterly.

  • Duration: 4-6 weeks
  • Availability: One artist per quarter
  • Location: Marfa, Texas
  • Eligibility: Artists using generative, systems-based, algorithmic art. Must be 18+ and have working proficiency in English.
  • Application Process: Applications reviewed on impact, engagement, and innovation.

Support

  • Facilities: Residence, Art Blocks Gallery equipment access.
  • Honorarium: $1650 stipend for food, travel, art supplies.
  • Networking: Access to the bustling art scene and network of local artists in Marfa, TX.
  • Engineering: Limited technical support provided by Art Blocks.
  • Project Release: Option to release culminating project through Art Blocks Studio. Option to release culminating project through OpenSea.
  • Expectations: Artists will provide a culminating presentation of their work for the Marfa community, hosted at the Art Blocks Gallery.

Residency Goals

  • Artistic Experimentation: Support artists in trying new and exciting methods of generative art.
  • Marfa Engagement: Connect with the art communities in Marfa and explore the desert environment of West Texas.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Welcome all artists, helping those in generative art to place their work in the context of contemporary art.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Innovation: The degree to which the artist hopes to push the boundaries of generative art and technology.
  • Impact: The potential impact of the project within the Art Blocks ecosystem and the broader art community.
  • Engagement: The ability of the project to foster meaningful engagement with the Art Blocks community and the public.
  • Exposure: The degree to which our selection supports future artist success and generative art diversity.
